Wrapp, a mobile application for iPhone and Andoid currently available only in Sweden, is set to arrive in the U.S. this spring. The app sends reminders to Facebook users who have installed Wrapp of their friends’ birthdays and allows them to purchase and send mobile gift cards—no actual wrapping necessary.

While Facebook is gearing up to introduce mobile ads in March, Wrapp offers another great opportunity for retailers to market their products and monetize their facebook pages. Users can pick from a variety of gift cards, many of them free, and personalize them with messages. The app reminds users of friends’ birthdays, but the mobile gift cards can be sent for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or no occasion at all. Online users are constantly looking for simple ways to properly celebrate or congratulate friends. Wrapp’s success will lie in the simplicity it brings to user’s lives.

Wrapp works in the favor of gift-givers and retailers alike by matching the social profile of the receiver with available partners that match his or her demographic. For instance, when sending a mobile gift card to your 50 year-old old mother-in-law, available cards might include Chico’s, Talbots, and other retailers that match that targeted demographic. This helps retailers reach their demographics while steering gift-givers in the right direction. This also comes in handy when you’re inclined to jab your mother-in-law with an entirely inappropriate gift card to Hot Topic.

Here’s how a recipient of a mobile gift card can redeem their gift: Once the gift is received it can be stored inside a wallet in the app. Wrapp then displays a bar code on the smartphone once the recipient is confirmed to be in a location that accepts the gift card.

For retailers, the process is available to them without charge. They are only responsible for a commission on actual sales.

Readers, expect Wrapp to be launching in the U.S. this spring. For now, we’d love to know how you feel about mobile gift cards, and whether or not you plan to download Wrapp. Let us know what you think in the comments below!
